The Medibuddy 2027 Histopathology BST Question Bank

The interview is scored across four categories, and each part is tightly timed, so you have a limited window to deliver the high-scoring answers you need to do well. That means every point has to land, and knowing how to structure each answer is essential. That's why each of our 47 scenarios comes with a model answer, written by candidates who scored highly in the 2026 Histopathology BST interview, so you know exactly how to approach every question the panel puts to you.
What's inside

What's included in the Histopathology BST Question Bank

There's nothing worse than reaching the interview and being handed a question you've never prepared for. The panel scores four categories, from your aptitude for histopathology to your suitability and academic record, so the safest approach is to revise across all of them. We provide scenarios for every category, including the core viva-style topics and the trickier professional situations that have come up before, so you don't get caught out.

Aptitude for Histopathology

The core of the discipline, from the specimen journey and frozen sections to immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, the autopsy and coronial law, each with a worked answer.

Enthusiasm & Personal Development

Questions on your motivation for histopathology and how you develop as a trainee, with example answers that show genuine engagement.

General Suitability

Professional and communication scenarios, from speaking with families to laboratory governance, with structured model answers for handling them well.

Academic Achievements, Research & Other Qualifications

Research, audit and relevant qualifications, with worked answers that show how to evidence your academic contribution and its impact.
Built around the four scored categories
Every scenario is anchored to Irish practice, coronial law and Irish laboratory services, with model answers structured against the scoring categories.
Try it

Try an example Histopathology BST question

You are a Histopathology BST1. A bereaved family has come to the hospital to speak with someone about their mother's post mortem. She died unexpectedly in hospital three days ago, and a hospital post mortem was carried out with the family's consent. The consultant pathologist who performed it is not available today, and a nurse asks whether you, as the trainee on the rota, could speak with the family and explain the findings.

How would you respond?

Question
How would you initially respond to the nurse's request, and what would you do before meeting the family?
Example answer
I would not refuse outright, but I would be honest about my limitations, as I have not performed or reported this post mortem and should not interpret findings I cannot stand over.
  • My priority is to contact the consultant who performed the examination, or an available supervising consultant, to clarify what can be shared and whether a finalised report has been issued.
  • I would check the laboratory information system to see what stage the case is at: provisional macroscopic findings, histology pending, or a finalised report, which under the HSE National Clinical Guidelines for Post Mortem Examination Services should ordinarily be the basis for any explanation.
  • I would not leave the family waiting without acknowledgement: I would ask the nurse to let them know I am arranging for the right person, and offer them somewhere to wait.
  • I would document every step.
Question
No consultant is reachable for the next hour, and the family says they cannot stay much longer. How do you manage this?
Example answer
If no consultant is reachable and the family cannot stay, I would still meet them, but I would not step outside my competence.
  • I would introduce myself honestly as a trainee pathologist, acknowledge their loss and the distress of waiting, and explain transparently why I cannot give the full clinical detail today.
  • Presenting post mortem findings I have not reported, as if I had the authority to interpret them, risks serious harm to a grieving family through inaccurate or premature information.
  • I would offer a concrete next step: a formal meeting or call with the responsible consultant at the earliest time, take the family's contact details, and commit to a specific follow-up.
  • The HSE guidelines and the Medical Council guidance both stress honesty, compassion and appropriate information-sharing. I would document what I told them and what was arranged.
Question
The family becomes upset, saying they were promised answers and nobody can tell them anything. How do you handle their distress?
Example answer
I would let the family speak and not become defensive; their frustration is entirely understandable.
  • I would use active listening, reflect back that I have heard them, and avoid jargon, over-explaining the process, or promising what the post mortem will show.
  • I would acknowledge plainly that they came expecting answers and we had not been able to give them today, and that I am sorry, rather than making excuses about busy consultants or histology timelines.
  • Once they feel heard, I would explain what I can: the examination is done, a report is being prepared, and the findings will be explained fully by the responsible pathologist.
  • The Medical Council Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics emphasises compassion, honesty and dignity; if the family were given unrealistic expectations at consent, that is a quality issue I would raise internally.
Question
This was a hospital post mortem, not a coroner's. What legal and ethical framework applies, and how does it shape what you can tell the family?
Example answer
A hospital post mortem is carried out with the family's consent and is distinct from a coroner's post mortem, where the legal process can control disclosure more tightly.
  • It is governed by the Coroners Act 1962, as amended in 2019, and the HSE National Clinical Guidelines for Post Mortem Examination Services; the family consented and are entitled to the findings once a finalised report is ready.
  • The finalised report belongs to the clinical record and can be shared by the responsible clinician or pathologist, but provisional or unverified findings should not be communicated as conclusions, as histology may change the picture.
  • The guidelines expect families to be told at consent how and when results will be communicated; if that did not happen clearly here, I would flag it internally as a quality issue.
  • As a BST1 my role is limited but clear: be honest about where the report is, stay within what has been formally established, and make sure the family get a proper explanation from the responsible pathologist as soon as possible.

That's one scenario. There are 46 more.

How we keep our Question Banks up to date

The Histopathology BST interview changes from year to year, and the biggest fear for any candidate is getting to interview day and realising you've revised with a question bank that's totally outdated.

That's why we review and update every Question Bank twice a year, so you know you're revising with scenarios that are likely to come up. We do this in April after the previous year's interviews, and again in the autumn when the new recruitment guidance is published.

For 2027, this process kept the Question Bank aligned with the current four-category interview, across aptitude for histopathology, enthusiasm and personal development, general suitability, and academic achievements and research, so you always practise with the format the panel is using now.
Updated for 2027 Interviews
Part 2 • Practise them live

The only interview resource where you can practise live with other candidates from across the country

Our Histopathology BST Question Bank tells you exactly how to answer real interview scenarios. But how you practise with them will determine how many marks you score. Simply reading answers off a screen won't prepare you for the intense scrutiny you'll face in the interview, and only practising with the same few colleagues limits the feedback you'll get. Medibuddy gives you unique access to Histopathology BST candidates across the country, so you can learn from a variety of perspectives and hear a far wider range of feedback than your own circle could ever give you.

Study Groups
When you prepare in isolation, you're relying on your own interpretation of the interview process, which is one of the quickest ways to get found out on the day. Study Groups connect you with other doctors across the country who are also applying to Histopathology BST, so you can engage and network with people preparing for the same interview as you. Everyone brings different experience from different hospitals, meaning you won't miss out on the key bits of information that could swing the interview in your favour.
Live MocksBeta
Candidates who don't take part in mocks often struggle to adapt to the pressure of the interview. Your knowledge might be correct, but without convincing delivery the interviewers will score you poorly. The best way to improve your delivery is to take part in as many live mocks as possible, which is why we haven't put a cap on how many you can do. All you have to do is join the waiting room and we'll match you with a different Histopathology BST candidate each time. Take turns as both the interviewer and candidate on real Question Bank scenarios, so you can see exactly how other candidates perform in real time while refining your own technique.
Peer FeedbackBeta
Preparing alone means you won't know how you're coming across during the interview, and preparing with the same few candidates means you'll miss opportunities to improve, which is why it's so important to get as many opinions as possible on your performance. With Medibuddy, you can record a mock and submit it for feedback from other candidates on the platform, so you receive a wider range of feedback and refine your answers with each person you practise with. Reviewing other people's mocks is just as valuable, as it shows you how strong candidates handle the same scenarios.

How to prepare for the Histopathology BST interview

Start with the Question Bank

Work through 47 scenarios across all four categories, each with a worked answer from a candidate who scored well in the 2026 interview. Start by reading how a strong answer is formed, then think about how you'd deliver it.

Talk the hard ones through in Study Groups

Study Groups are your biggest opportunity to network and connect with other candidates sitting the same interview as you. Everyone on the platform is in the same boat, so don't be scared to get involved and ask questions. Someone in your study group might just help you work through a scenario you've been struggling with.

Rehearse out loud in Live Mocks

Live mocks are where you begin to put everything you've learned into practice, and we know from experience that those who practise with a wide range of candidates usually do the best. Organise mocks with people from one of your study groups, or get matched with a random Histopathology BST candidate, then take turns as interviewer and candidate using real scenarios until answering out loud under pressure feels normal.

Get reviewed with Peer Feedback before the day

Once you've recorded a mock, you can have other community members review it. This lets you see how you come across to other people, and gives you time to refine your delivery as you revise, rather than being caught out on the day. Reviewing other people's mocks is just as crucial, as you see how other candidates navigate the same scenarios.
